Top Ten reasons I’m not on the cruise…..
January 26th, 2010

10. An eight hour bus ride to Fort Lauderdale leaving mom's house at 3:30 am......with a three year old.

9. No comic book shops.

8. 50 bars serving all your favorite cocktails, not one is ever happy to see a three year old.

7. All you care to eat buffet. Again.

6. The "I can't wait to go on that awesome snorkeling trip and bar hopping island adventure, oh yeah, I have a three year old with me" moment.

5. It's easier to embezzle with the whole family at sea.

4. Trying to explain to a three year why the boat has 47 shops that specialize in hair wraps but doesn't have one playground.

3. The last time we left Champ at home for a week with a baby-sitter it took a thousand dollars and two weeks to cure his separation anxiety

2. This is the only week of the year I don't have to share the fried chicken with Uncle Bubba.

And the number one reason I'm not on the cruise this week,

An eight hour bus ride to Savannah leaving South Florida at 9:00am.....with a three year old.

Seriously, a cruise is a tough trip with young children unless it has a fair amount of special activities for kids and this trip is more adult orientated so we took a pass. I also have a good bit of work for the web site debut coming up next Tuesday. We are gonna do little homemade movies once a month and I spent a few hours doing some edit work on our first one last night and I think y'all will get a kick out of seeing them.

Our food stylist for Best Dishes and a regular contributor to Paula Deen dot com, Libby Summers, is on vacation too and asked if I would guest blog in her spot this week on mom's site so pop in over there and check it out.

Thanks for checking back in y'all. I am so excited about our new site and really proud of our team doing awesome work under the ever watchful eye of a deadline looming.

T-minus seven days......do good things y'all.

Just remembered it was cruise week.  Definitely wish I was there instead of a regular work week.  But can’t blame you for not going though. I don’t even have kids and it sounds exhausting!
I see that you guys are heading to Charlotte next month.  It’s about 15 minutes from my house and I was all excited, I could use some fun and some cooking tips.  But I think the cost is a little above my budget!  Really wish I could be there.  I work at a great hotel though, so you guys can come stay with me!
All the best to you and everyone reading…

Hi Jamie,

Can’t blame you for staying home, somethings are not meant for children. Better to make vacations that all enjoy, there will be plenty of time for cruises with Brooke and Jack when he gets older. As for the eight hour bus ride, I don’t think I would enjoy that even as an adult!!!!!

Can’t wait for the new site, I’m sure it will be well worth waiting for. Take care and as always, trying to do good.

Hey Jamie!

It has been awhile since I blogged with you. A lot has been going on. Just moved and that should say it all….2009 was a very tough year for me, meeting you and Bobby was the best thing that happened. A few weeks into 2010 and it has been horrible already. I’m ready to come back to Savannah!

You know having a 4 yr old myself, I completely understand you not going on the cruise. You have a lifetime ahead to do that. They are only little once and you can not change them back once they are grown.

I am excited to see the new site! Glad to see y’all on Facebook too!!!

I was thinking about going to see y’all at Ovens Auditorium, but I am not hip on the balcony section, esp with the price to be so far away, I would much rather be closer to the stage so I could see better… that would be the whole point in going, sooo I don’t think I will, those seats are really expensive.
How about coming back to Greenville. Anywhere besides Sams..maybe the Carolina First Center??!!!

Well have a great week, I am going to keep swimming.

Hey Jamie
Now I don’t feel so bad missing the cruise, I had to cancel because my mom got sick and had to make sure she was going to be alright. You know those mama’s come first.  I can’t wait to see the home movies…I sent packages for you and the family for the cruise, hopefully you will get yours.  Maybe I will see you and Bobby in March when I am at the Lady and Sons, I can’t wait to try that fried chicken…Have a great day!!!!

Carol on January 27 2010

Can’t wait for the new site.  Poor Jack couldn’t take 7 days on a boat either.  Maybe next year you could take the cruise on the Big Red Boat with Disney - that way everyone in your family can go.  Well, maybe a week away from family is a good thing.  Love the 10 count down.  Have a good week, Jamie!

Judi on January 27 2010

Hi Jamie,

Oh my gosh, now this was funny, but so true! When you first mentioned that you weren’t going to make the cruise I understood, but reading this, I totally can relate as can all parents that have or have had young kids on vacation. Ok…for me, not numbers 2 and 5 smile , but pretty much the rest! HAHA. It’s so hard to keep them entertained as it is, but on a cruise ship, I can’t even imagine. Maybe a Disney one next time for Jack. Oh…and no bus ride, that will help for you and Brooke.

Have a great rest of the week. Looking forward to all the great things coming next week!

Hey Jamie,
This site is awesome. We are heading to Savannah February 1-6 and of course our first stop will be Lady and Sons. My husband was wonderful enough 3 years ago on our way home from Disney (I understand about the car ride with little ones, we were coming from Maryland-16hrs)to stop by Savannah so I could come into the restaurant, we were unable to get a seat but lucky enough to get some wonderful southern cooking to take along for the ride. I was so hoping to see one of you, but I did take wonderful pictures of restaurant and area. I was so excited. As I watch all of your moms shows and went to see her in DC last year, I absolutely love your mother. She is such an inspiration to me and my cooking. She reminds me of my mother whom I lost 14 yrs ago so everytime I see her, it brings back wonderful memories. You are all very blessed. As we make our plans to come to Savannah for our conference at Savannah Christian Church, we plan on coming to Lady and Sons Tues and Wed, I am praying we can get in and enjoy the restaurant. Will we possibly see any of you? How wonderful that would be! We plan to go to Bubbas as well, of course! Do you have any other suggestions of places to visit while we are in Savannah.
Hope all is well with you and your family and many blessings to you all.  Cant wait to visit!!
Sincerely,
Holly Healy

Well, I hope everything works out will all the work everyone has put into the website. I’m looking forward to seeing it. Maybe in the future you can take Jack on a Disney cruise. Thank you for all you do!! Have a Blessed Week.

Hey that was great I will be in Savannah March 4th- 11th will you all be in town then? what is my odds of meeting you guys again. seen you in KY. on your book tour.

I don’t comment often, but reading this, I have to say it seems like you and Brooke are such thoughtful parents. Life changes with kids for sure! My husband and I ended up with four brothers in just a matter of 9 months. Two years later STILL trying to figure out how to juggle work, school, homework (I still suck at math), sickness, baseball, hip hop dance class, soccer, therapy for all of us and adult alone time..what’s that again?? smile

Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!

Kristina on January 27 2010

Jamie, loved your ten reasons for not cruising especially No. 5 and No. 3—that was a hoot.  Looking forward to the movies.  Hope Paula gets some rest as she works so hard.  Can’t wait for the new site.  Tell your “baby bro” to twitter once in a blue moon.  Miss him and his pictures.
Take care.

i was trying to imagine Mr Jack running around those suites on the big boat, now i see hes not there! best for all in the long run. as Sherri said, they grow so fast, enjoy the time at home.
Looking fwd to the new site, exciting! thanks for keeping things so up to date. we fans truly appreciate all the time and effort you and the crew put into the various sites y’all have. it keeps us “close”.

Hey Jamie, how old is your son? I don’t think I caught it….ha!

My sons are 17, 14, and 11 - heights of 6’4”, 6’5”, and 6’ respectively. They eat like horses, are potty trained but still a little iffy on that aim thing; though when the day is done I love ‘em. I’m surrounded by all men and I’m not sure I’d have it any other way.

Hi Jamie, to funny on your top 10 reasons why you and brooke decided aganist it i totally understand on trying to keep a three year old occupied been there done that. My boy’s are alot older 11 and 14 and hard to keep entertained at there age.
Your new site sounds so exciting.I agree with Donna S That we all do appreciate everything you do for your fans.
Thanks Jamie!

Ok Jsmie! BUT you can join us on our Virtual cruise over at your mom’s site…
I have to ask Why the bus and not fly???
You always do good and now I know what the surprise is!!!!
Love ya all!! and enjoy the fried chicken!

Totally agreed!  I can’t say I’d be looking forward to a cruise with my three year-old junior chaperone, either.

Jamie,

Loved your top 10, im sure the family is missing you and your family and calling daily to check up on you.  Someone really had to stay back and mind the fort.  I cant wait to see you guys in May.  Have a great week counting down to the new website…

Sorry you missed out on some snorkeling and other fun stuff with the family.

Maybe next time you get a great vacation offer, take and pay for Champ AND a babysitter (or the inlaws), so that everyone can play and be together.

Still doing good.

Loved your list of reasons not to go on the cruise, #5 is my favorite. Being a mother of three I could add one more reason to the list; packing a suitcase and necessary items for a three year old to take on a cruise.

Just two questions; why a bus and who came up with that idea?! The thought of eight hours on a bus even without a three year old would make me say, “I’ll just meet you there!”

Looking forward to Tuesday’s web site debut.

Teresa on January 27 2010

I don’t blame you for passing on the cruise. A 8 drive would be hard on some adults.  You all should check out a Disney Cruise. They are wonderful. Disney knows how to do it right. We took one for our 25th anniversary and had a ball and it was four adults.  They have so many activities for the kids and they won’t mind if you leave them and go do some fun adult stuff. You should really check it out. Can’t wait for the new website and the news.

Diane G on January 27 2010

Sorry to hear you weren’t going to be on the cruise this year…but I’m glad you DID go in 2007, as my Husband and I had a wonderful time with You and your entire family!!
We were so appreciative of the quality and quantity of time you guys gave to us all on that cruise, and we will Never forget it!!!
Thanks, and enjoy Jack, he will be grown up before you can blink!!

Karen on January 27 2010

OMG Jamie, you absolutely crack me up!  I remember my kids being 3 years old, it was a challenge just going grocery shopping let alone a cruise geared toward adult entertainment/fun.  I am loving your sense of humor and can’t wait to meet you in May with my daughter, who is 15 years old and still has your hand written card framed to show off to friends and family.  Hope your family is enjoying the cruise, hope you’re enjoying the fried chicken, and hope your three year old appreciates the time (he does, he just doesn’t know it) smile. Always, Tracey

Tracey Lopez on January 27 2010

Hey Jamie,

Well you should have sent me in your place…HA HA!!!  Sure wish I could have been on that cruise.  But then again, I’m sure its not as fun without you there.  I can’t wait til next tuesday. I am so excited about the new stuff coming up.  This will defintely be my first stop after work next tuesday.  That is if work doesn’t kick my butt first.  I started a new postion that I has “real” working hours.  Monday thru Friday 8 to 4:30….no nights or weekends which is great but I am just not use to working 5 days without a break in between.  I am sooooo tired. Guess I will get use to it though.  Its a fun job and I am enjoying it.  Anyway, don’t have too much fun while everyone is gone.  Tell Bobby HEY for me when he gets back.  Talk to ya later.

I’m sure there’s a lot of people on the cruise who are missing you…...but kudos to you for putting family first!  Looking forward to the new site.

Jamie,
Your top ten reasons for not going were very funny. I can’t wait for the new site. I also can’t wait to see you and Bobby in May. I should be in Savannah May 6th and 7th.
Your mommas recipe for bannana bread. Is very good!
Talk to you later!! Have fun working on the new web-site!

I’m with ya regarding long trips! My boys were talking about our beach trip last night. They remember all the good things and a friend that went with us said, “Yeah, remember Elijah cried the entire three hours home!”  Long trips are hard. Plus, I realize now that my little guy gets car sick and that’s part of the problem. Too cute about Champ.

Looking forward to stories and pictures from the cruise.

Can’t wait for the new site! Thanks for all you do, lots of fun.

You’re a funny guy Jamie!  I totally understand for staying back…it’s difficult to travel with little ones for so many days and having VERY limited kid-friendly entertainment.  And 8 hours on a bus would be my #1 reason too for not going on the cruise!  Last year we flew to California for my cousin’s wedding and our boys were three at the time and after that experience, we decided to hold off for a few more years from taking any long trips again.  They did have a blast at the wedding…they couldn’t stop dancing!! lol
I’m sure Bobby and the rest of the family/bloggers are having a fun time and wish we could be on that cruise with them.  If the next Deen cruise is on a Disney ship…sign us up right now!!
Can’t wait to see the new site and what you all have in store for us!  The homemade movies sound GREAT!!  So excited to see you guys in May and looking forward to meeting a few fellow bloggers,
Kim W, Jennifer, and Tracey L.
Eat as much fried chicken as you can!! LOL…
...T-minus 3 days. LOL smile
Take care!!!

Marina on January 28 2010

The best cruise would be a Marvel/DC Comics cruise, departing from Savannah - complete with Batman, Superman, Spidey, and Green Lantern!  Even Brooke would not mind seeing men in tights I bet!

Sharon V on January 28 2010

Okay, I have another guess regarding your big announcement tomorrow on your website:
Are you and Bobby finally opening your own restaurant down the street from The L&S?  I know it was talked about a while ago.

C’mon, you gotta like it better than the wedding/baby guesses you were getting?!

hey Jamie,

You are too funny.  I think you should go on Letterman and do a top 10 list.  Maybe you could give us all a top 10 list of why it’s good to be Paula Deen’s son.  LOL!

Number five cracked me up! Sometimes it is just nice to stay home and miss out…being a single parent I have found out that is the way to go sometimes, just kick back, chill, and do what you have to do smile Hope you all have a good week…

I sure hope Paula and Bobby came back to a business and not a postard from you in the Bahamas!!!!!

Sure did miss you last week!!!!

Hope you had a great week.

Just found your blog.  Good for you.  Family should always come first.  Enjoy each moment-kids grow up so fast.  I have 3 grown kids, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grands.  I enjoy each moment w/each of them that the good Lord gives me.  Wish I’d done that more when my kids were young and worried and worked less on things that didn’t really matter. Jack is blessed to have such good parents.

Love all the Deen family and what you all stand for.

Blessings,
Margaret
