The Media…
August 26th, 2011

Can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em.

It’s funny that our family has become a part of the media. We have always cast a leery eye towards most of the electronic noise that we as consumers are bombarded with everyday. Being in several different aspects of “media” has opened us up to criticism and we accept that as part of what we are fortunate enough to be able to do making a living. Some of us take it in stride (me) some of us take it super personal (Bobby) and some are squarely in the center (Mom).

I bring this up today to mention whats on my radar this week: Anthony Bourdain.

As you may have heard Anthony gave an interview in TV Guide last week taking a few of the Food Network host’s to task over their television show menus. He also said that mom was "the most dangerous woman in America”. My mom…the most dangerous woman in America. If he had worked for her fifteen or twenty years ago he would really know what he was talking about but I suspect the statement is part of a plan to get as much publicity for his new book as possible. But hey, he has his right to an opinion.

And, it also worked. For a few days every time I turned around there it was, a picture of mom and a talking head asking if this was the most dangerous woman in America.

It’s my opinion that anyone who takes part in a promotional campaign for the television show, Man versus Food, should not be so quick to take on the responsibility of this nation’s health. But y’all know what they say about opinions……

He certainly got a lot of press including an op-ed piece in The New York Times yesterday. Frank Bruni used Anthony’s comments as a starting point to discuss our society’s class differences of food. The whole “One man’s bacon is another man’s pork belly”. I really enjoyed it. There were thirty or forty comments about the piece and after reading those I thought, “Man, these people write waaaay better than me” and “They pretty much agree with Tony about our food”. Again, it’s an opinion so…whatever. BUT. One reader assumed that while Anthony Bourdain cut his teeth as a chef toiling on the line at a restaurant, doing dishes and making it the hard way, my mom was a prepackaged, made for television prop. Out of all the crap I’ve seen and heard since we started out in the media part of our business, and I have seen and heard a great deal of crap, this is the one that I call out. My mom not only worked on the line, but did all the shopping, prepping, menu planning, serving and cleaning up after herself and all others for TEN years. Everyday. Seven days a week, three meals a day….with nary a sous chef in sight.

So, Mr. New York Times op-ed comment person, kiss my butt.

Let me climb down from my high horse.

Jack Deen has started school and is fighting the end of summer as if his life depended on it….a real chip off the old block. Matthew at three months, also known as Moose, weighs in at 18 pounds and is stretching the boundaries of his six month onesie. Yes, another chip, same block.

Thank y’all for checking back in, look for a more consistent schedule from me here at the blog. Summer is over for all of us.

Do good things

Jamie,
I am a firm believer in that you can eat whatever you want in moderation!  I use your Mother’s recipes all of the time!  I just don’t eat a whole pan!  There are a lot worse people in this world and maybe Mr. Bourdain should look around!  Your Mother and your family are the products of VERY hard work!  It wasn’t something that was handed to you all!  I say to heck with him and keep doing what you are doing!  I love you all!  You show that hard work and family is what is all about!  I am proud to say that I use your recipes and enjoy all of them.  I was in Savannah last year and ate the the Lady and Sons and was NEVER treated so wonderfully!  I say keep up the good work and I am glad to say that hard work does pay off!

Your mother cooks real food that real people eat, and like.  Real food that children won’t turn up their noses at because it’s full of odd ingredients.  Real food that we can afford to buy, cook and eat in this economy that is so difficult for so many of us.

She never uses ingredients I’ve never heard of.  Eye of newt isn’t ever going into her skillet and she’s not going to snob up and talk down to the people watching her.  She isn’t going to assume we can pony up for a $75 piece of meat or go crazy with truffles.

I was blessed to meet her once and she was so delightful and charming that I haven’t got words to express what a pleasure it was to chat with her for a few minutes.

Keep on keeping on, all of you, and continued blessings your way.

Jamie, I felt like A.P. was insulting my my own mama when he said those things about Paula. I just love the way she handled it, such a classy lady. I have never watched his show, nor will I ever.
I love what you all do, keep it up! Heading to Savannah in March for the St. Patricks day parade and especially The Lady and Sons.
Sending you love and keep giving us those best dishes.

Jamie,
I adore your mother! I recently (April 14th) came to Savannah to celebrate(and stalk your Mom:) my 50th birthday and whenever I told anyone of my trip the first thing they would say is “I just love Paula Deen”!

Paula dangerous? Only if you consider love, kindness, good food and a wild laugh life threatening.

Your Adoring Maryland Eastern Shore Fan,
Jessica

Maybe Mr. Boudoir (smirk) needs to step back and see that dear Paula Deen is getting more press from this than he is—because she is much loved by so many me thinks this will backfire.  I wouldn’t buy his book before (because I never heard of him) but love buying ANYTHING with the name PAULA DEEN on it.  I think Paula should send him one of her famous butter pound cakes :p lol just sayin’

“Kiss my butt”...I LOVE IT!!!  You tell ‘em.  Good grief, yet someone else blaming someone else for someone else’s eating habits.  We all know what is good for us and what isn’t and if you eat unhealthy 24/7 then that is your own problem, not Paula Deen’s.  Everything in moderation.  I really wish people would bring themselves up without dragging someone else down.  I enjoy your family and Paula’s show immensely and love that you offer some “lightened up” recipes.  I proudly keep Paula Deen’s “Savannah Style” on my coffee table along with my books on historic Virginia!!  Keep on doin’ what you’re doin’!

Love a guy who stands up for his mama!  Anthony has eaten too many so called exotic foods it has fryed his brain and taste buds .

I have always been a fan of your family.  Met you and your brother last year on Long Island at your book signing.  I was with my 2 sons and a basket of jam for your family smile
I have to admit I was always a fan of No Reservation and Anthony Bourdain.  His raw edge was refreshing…until now.  As you say Jamie, all are entitled to their opinion but he went a bit too far.  I was immediatly turned off and am no longer a fan.  Glad you spoke up on this.

I suppose something roll off your back easier than others, and I can see how that works. But, we all know how and when and under what circumstances you and your family started out, and continued on in Food. Fortunately for us, I am a chef also, everyone has to eat… and everyone has to have an opinion. You can rest assured that when that Op-Ed piece was read by friends, fans and the 10 other people that don’t know you guys and y’alls mom, he was collectively kicked in the keister. I think the reason that y’all are so popular, isn’t really the food.. its the family and friends and community that you are apart of. Y’all are just like us, in my case - less disfunctional, only we get to be apart of your family gatherings and get to be voyeurs of what makes you the second happiest ( family being first ). So we were right there with you! Only your bullhorn is louder than ours.

We went and stayed at Y’all Come Inn April of ‘10. It was a great place to bring a family and have a reunion with friends, thank you for sharing the photos and the space with relative strangers.

It is sad that we all can’t support each other regardless of differences.  No matter what anyone says, your mother Paula Dean will be one of the most upbeat, real and positive smiling faces on TV.  She is “one of us”!! I suppose she will never live up to the standards of Anthony Bourdain.  However, I really don’t wanna see Miss Paula chain smoking while eating the inside of a bull and taking back shots until she was drunk.  We all have our own “cup of tea” and I think it is fair to say, you can serve me up a cup of Paula Dean anytime.

As for her food being indulgent or not “society correct”
We are adults and we are responsible for what we put into our bodies.  I say eat in moderation!  Home cooking brings people together and that is something that society is lacking.  Family dinners don’t make you fat and lazy, but fast food and video games can!!!

I wish you and your family, happiness, good health and full bellies!!

Well said Jamie!  We are who we are.  Please remember Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”  Don’t let Anthony Bourdain get to you.  I personally refuse to watch him because I saw him be rude to children on one of his shows and I didn’t like it.

I have a photo of you, Bobby & I framed in my kitchen from June, 2005.  My husband and I stayed on Tybee Island and came into town to eat at The Lady & Sons.  I accidentally ran into you & Bobby while on my way to the ladie’s room and we had a wonderful conversation about MN where we are from.  It was so great to meet you two and you couldn’t have been more friendly.  Thanks for that!

Keep being you and God Bless smile

Anthony Bourdain doesn’t host “Man v. Food/Nation” - that’s Adam Richman and I’ve never heard him being derogatory towards your mother. Bourdain does “No Reservations” and really, can you trust a man who eats the stuff he’s tried on there??? I say no.

Lisa on August 26 2011

Hi and let’s see….

I had no idea a person with a reputation for eating donkey snot and emu feet would know enough about southern cuisine to make a rational statement anyway!! Has he eaten any of your Mom’s food? Does he have a degree in nutritional studies?  Does he have a brain that matches the size of his mouth? Show me some credentials and then I might take the time to hear him out! I think the reality of it all is he is brain damaged from all the weird food and water he has ingested in his travels!

You folks have given the Southern cook/chef the inspiration to be even more conscience of our food and nutrition and caring for our families. God bless you for all the hard work you have done to better yourselves and those who are benefited by your expertise!

I say Food Network should challenge him to cook on Iron Chef!! It would tickle my heart to see the likes of Bobby Flay. Mike Simon and Cat Cora get in the kitchen with him!! And, best of all, I would love to see Alton Brown get into a little chat session with him!! Oh, imagine the ratings for that event!!

We love your Mom, we love your brother, we love you and all the family! God’s blessings to you all!

Vicki on August 26 2011

Anthony who?  I say that in jest, but the truth is I have never watched a single episode of “No Reservations”. On the other hand, I have traveled to Tybee for the last two years, largely because our family is such a fan. We have eaten at the Lady & Sons, we visit the buffet in Harrah’s Tunica often,  we bought your mom’s gorgeous furniture, and - most importantly - we use y’all’s recipes all the time. Why? Because your family resonates with our Southern upbringing and values and we feel connected, even though we don’t know you. I don’t have such a “neighborly” feeling toward Mr. Bourdain smile

Kristina on August 26 2011

Jamie, I enjoyed your blog as always.  Personally, I like Anthony Bourdain’s show…but, I LOVE your mom’s shows even better! Why? Could it be the food?  Sure…that has a lot to do with it.  The humor that is shown in everything she does?  Oh, heck yeah! But, what I love most of all about your mother, is the fact that she always makes it a point to include her family in all she does. A great mother is always there to help make your day better and most of the time food is included! Your mom’s main ingredient that is used in all her meals (aside from the butter…haha), is the one ingredient Mr. Bourdain cannot seem to equal, no matter where he travels to or where he was trained.  That ingredient is none other than, love. She lives to love and to share herself, good and bad, with anyone who is willing to give her the time of day. And I think it is pretty ballsy (and hypocritical) for a man like Mr. Bourdain to call your mom out on “unealthy” cooking when he smokes and drinks as much as he does! I mean, seriously???? At least the food your mom cooks is all natural!  And now for my last point! No chef…and I do not care where they were trained…could ever match the experience or expertise of a mother or grandmother, when it comes to cooking a meal for the people that mean most to them. Period. End of story.
May God continue to bless you the Deen family.
Love to you all-
MG
PS - My daughter LOVES your mom and her love of butter…they have a lot in commone! HA!  smile

Bordain, who is never seen without booze and cigarettes, talking about all the drugs he did (back in the day, of course), and HE’S pointing from the pulpit ? The “sins” he refers to of Paula Deen’s are, in fact, little kisses from Jesus, every bite confirming love and goodwill that was meant to be spread with open arms and softened butter. Cooking was meant to be first for a basic need, then education, a sharing time, a personal way to show others how much you care for them, anything else is putting lace on a pig and marching it through the village, when, for all it’s dressing and splendor, is still, very much a pig. I taught my children, math, following directions, and patience, and shared laughs, gossip, memories, all while cooking many of the same things she has, with now my grandchildren, Jackson & Cole. Let’s see Bourdain, who admits he is horrible with people one-on-one, have the same rapport with “his” public. That is if everyone can pull their noses out of the air long enough to notice others are in the room. It must be nice sitting alone on that pedestal, up there with your favorite company, yourself, Bourdain. Enjoy the view. As for me, I’m gonna grab a coffee, a slice of gooey butter cake, and enjoy life with a kitchen full of laughter and good wishes ! I can only say, as a old Southerner, “Bless your heart” (and kiss my butt too, lol)

Wanda Hoover-Tyler on August 26 2011

Must say I am surprised that the comments so far are not bad,I may however change that…Anthony Bourdain has absolutely nothing to talk about…Has everyone simply forgot this man always, and I do mean always has a drink in his hand…I have seen him start the morning on the show with another drink to ease the hangover, least we not forget the chain smoking as well….Some so called men cannot seem to enjoy a Lady’s success..Paula you will always be the Queen of the South to me..from another Georgian..Please keep your show the same as always…we love you and the boys…

I get Paula’s magazine, own a few of her cookbooks & have several of her recipes I printed off of the FN site.  Her recipes are the BEST & are my families favorites!  Anthony what’s his name is jealous he’s not as dearly loved as Paula.

Kim on August 26 2011

I have to say that your mothers cooking is exactly the menu that me and my 3 siblings grew up on.  None of us were over weight, in fact we were mainly skin and bones.  Now that we are adults we are all blessed with extra padding smile  I truly believe it has to do with the foods being prepackaged and the hormones injected into the meat that we buy.  The cost of food is astronomical, so a lot of people cannot afford to buy organic, or the best meat from the butcher.  Maybe Mr. Anthony should look into the food producers before he points fingers!
He is quite pompus and doesn’t seem to have a clue how average Americans and their families live.
Kuddos to all the Deen’s for opening their recipes and sharing their lives with the public, even with the scrutiny that comes with it!  I agree that everyone else can “kiss ur butt”!!
“Love and BEST DISHES!!”

Anthony is a true chef, and has the mentality of a french snob.Paula has NEVER claimed to be a chef..she’s the first to tell you that she is a home cook. She shares recipes that have been handed down to her from family members and enjoys cooking for and with the people she loves.I see no danger in that. Most of the viewers of food network shows are home cooks as well. They are not looking to make pate or escargot. If that were the case,we would certainly look to Mr.Bourdain.There is plenty of room for everyone in the food business..the world is full of many people with varied tastes. I can almost guarantee that Paula Deen never took drugs in her restaurant or had an elicit encounter in her restaurant bathroom..that is the lifestyle Mr.Bourdain led, perhaps more dangerous?Look,Paula is larger than life, she exemplifies the American dream….she worked her behind off to support her sons….sheer determination got her where she is.If he cannot appreciate that, well then ,shame on him.I wonder what type of meals Anthony’s mother served him?Keep going Paula…you are loved by many, and we don’t enjoy escargot!

My family and I eat so much from all the Deen’s cookbooks.
We are happy and healthy. AB needs to so “Sorry” mean it and really move on.  He is messing with hard working, good people with a lot to give. I would not eat most of the stuff he has put in his mouth. YUK.
I want him to know how I started cooking with your mom. In 2005 my husband was dignosed with terminal lung cancer. That Dec. my Aunt bought me 2 of Paulas cookbooks, because she knew that her show was a bright spot of the day for my husband and I. I cooked almost everything before he died the following July. I even pretended to be her in the kitchen and it made my husband laugh so hard.  There is so much more to this family then AB really knows.  I love ya’ll and butter too!!

Debbie on August 26 2011

Jaime, I love your boldness.lol I agree. Women in the South are not just “occassional” cooks.  Most moms I know have at least 4 children, (I have 5 and 3 step), but most have 6 or more.  Southern women cook from “scratch” 3 times each day, plan dinner parties, and know how to entertain the preacher on Sunday in the middle of cleaning her house, running the errands, paying the bills, helping the community, accomplishing church duties, feeding the hungry, raising the kids, doing homework, continuing her education, loving her husband, and squeezing a moment to sip a cup of coffee in between!  Your mom is a heroin and example for woman-kind across America, as well as an accomplished cook.  Southern women do not need a degree stating that she can cook or run a business; her degree is in children, her husband, her friends, her community, her church, and her legacy.  That is a greater accomplishment than running around wasting two weeks trying to cook the perfect egg!  With a southern family, that is accomplished in the morning meal after cooking 2-3 eggs per person times 8!!

Its ashame that to sell something someone has to bash someone elses good fortune that they worked hard and overcame obstacle to get to.  You don’t try to be something that your not.  I appreciate, as I’m sure everyone else does, that you all keep it real.  You also share alot of things with us and you have never forgotten your roots and you always make us feel welcome.  Most of all you all give back to the community even when times are tough.  Hang in there and give em heck!!! Have fun with your family!!!! Love Paula from California

Mr. Bourdain isn’t worthy to kiss your butt! Keep up the good work and ignore idiots who dare to speak out against you. We love you!!!

The Deen Bros your mom are the greatest! You all took the high road with trash talk from that thing on Travel Channel. No longer watch it. You all are the epitomy of Southern cooking and hospitality. My grandmother was from Kentucky. Also in the words of Julia Child who loved her butter too, “we don’t eat like this everyday.” I’ve heard Paula say that on her show. I say you and Bobbie take him out behind the woodshed so to speak.

Living in Savannah, I have had the absolute pleasure of meeting you, Bobby and Mrs. Paula and I have to say that you ALL are wonderful, caring and honest people that anyone would be lucky to call “friends”.  Stay true to yourselves and we, your fans and friends, will be right by your side and we’ll always “have your back”.

People like your mom show the rest of us that with hard work and determination, dreams can come true. She is an inspiration, and though I don’t ‘know’ your mom, I would venture to say that fame has not changed her a bit. Anthony Bourdain is a real you-know-what, who thinks he’s better than everyone else. Your mom is out there sharing and giving and treating real people just like I would imagine she did before anyone ever heard of Paula Deen! Keep on doing what y’all do. If it wasn’t working, he would have no one to complain about!

Hi Jamie,

Good to hear from you even if it’s to let off some steam!! Criticism seems to be a way of life these days, food network stars, tv stars, and then there is politics. If only people could do good with the energy they use to criticize, imagine the world we would be living in. The way I take these articles is that he must feel threaten by your families success, therefore he has to criticize.

Enjoy your family, enjoy life and as you say “do good things”. Take care.

Diane on August 26 2011

Jamie, I say Good for you for standing up for your mama!  I use her recipes alot and the family always asks, “Is this another Paula Deen dish”?  I always smile and say yes.  I think this man needs to read your mama’s book or better yet come to Savannah himself.  You could put him on the Paula Deen tour and he would learn alot about your mama, you, Bobby and even Michael Groover.  We did that same tour about a year ago and we learned that the driver was a family friend of Michael’s from years back.  Every day is a new day and a new time for learning.  Don’t let this man and his opinions spoil the sweet smile you always have on your face.

Jamie you and your family know I am sure that we all love you and yours as if we were all one big family!  I was (am) so mad at Anthony Bourdain’s statements about Paula!  First of all I have NEVER liked his show and have always found him to be a strange one at the very least.  We are behind you and your Mom all the way.  One thing Mr. Bourdain should remember….this is America and we eat Paul’s food out of CHOICE and I for one hope that is never taken away from us by someone like him!!!  Love to you all.

Jamie, I enjoyed reading your “rebuttal” to the snobbery that was passed off as intelligent opinion. I love your Mom’s work ethic, and she has been on my list of heroes for quite a few years now. Your mom is fun, intuitive, down to earth, and kind! I can’t imagine why someone would make her such a target; unless of course, it was simply to make themselves look better. And in my book that is MEAN! Y’all keep up the good work, I’ve learned so much from y’all…and my 6 yr old daughter can hardly wait for “Paula to come over in the afternoon” (that’s when we watch the show).

Anthony has a right to his opinion however it is interesting the timing of all of this seeing that his book is due to come out soon, I did see the piece on TV he went after Sandra Lee and Guy, now I love me some Food Network and I can never say that I’ve enjoyed any of his No Reservations shows. Ms. Paula cooks damn good food of corse its in moderation! She has a wonderful blessing of cooking and sharing that with the world. I also know that Sandra Lee does alot for children that are hungry in our country and I’ve atually met her at a book singing, she was dressed down and seemed very humble thats what I like about Paula as well. Your MAMA is awesome!!! They can all kiss our butts with a side of butter please :D

the irony i see, if anyone who criticized that way actually followed your family, they would know there’s nothing to point to. real fans know how your mama started out, real fans excuse any little grease on the plate, real fans ask for more! and real fans know that person showed his ignorance tenfold. yet, it pointed the view towards your mama and as usual she came out classier than any southern debutante. and real fans love her (and your family) all the more.
enuf kiss up smile

Hey Jamie, loved your blog rebuttal.  I heard about Bourdain’s comments.  He’s an A$$ (excuse me).  I saw his show a few times and I don’t think it was No Reservations.  I’m not sure what it was.  He was traveling to exotic places and eating things that made me sick.  He’s a jerk.  Why he has a show on Food Network is beyond me.  You say he has a book out?????  He can keep it.
I don’t know personally you or Bobby or Paula but I’ve read Paula’s book, It’s not about the cooking.  IF anyone out there hasn’t read it, go get it and read it.  Very inspiring.  Paula worked her butts off and she is just amazing.  Very down to earth and loving as we all know how much she loves her family.
So Bourdain, from me to you, TAKE A HIKE.
Hope we see pictures soon again of “Moose”.  I know he’s a doll like his brother.
Take care; Jack have a fun year in school; hey to Bobby and lots of admiration and love to Paula.

Hi Jamie:
It is truly ashamed that you have to take time to defend such a wonderful family.  I get so excited anytime I see Paula Deen’s name on anything - magazine, cookbook, cooking show, etc.  I also look forward to anything that you and Bobby create.  I enjoy your entire family because you all have your priorities in the right place - you put family first.  The food is awesome, but the sincerity that the Deen family puts forward and offers to the world is a true blessing. Thanks to your entire family and please do not worry about the idiots—-what goes around comes around in due time.
God Bless and Take Care! Diane

Hi, Jamie:
I’m not one to speak out publicly, but Anthony’s ignorance riled me enough to speak out.  It’s one thing to have a difference of opinion, but he clearly turned this into a personal attack on Miss Paula on several different levels.  Obviously, his mother didn’t raise him right!  He’s clearly ignorant on several levels, too, but he needs to get his facts straight before he starts running his mouth.  Miss Paula has stated on many occasions that she doesn’t eat rich comfort food all of the time.  Plus, I think most of us know that y’all have been lightening up a number of your recipes.  Maybe Anthony needs to come to the South and let us teach him some real manners and Southern culture.  Y’all rise above it and show him who has real class….and one more thing:  GO DAWGS!!!

Jamie Deen: GOD BLESS YOU, HONEY! For everything from speaking your mind, (though I’d have used a bit more “colorful language”) to being your gracious mother’s son! (On that note, having read your article I’m thoroughly convinced I’m a long lost sibling.)

The trouble with a lot of the news / media people today is they are NOT doing their homework. Anyone that knows ANYTHING about your mama knows how she started out in yall’s kitchen AT HOME making sandwiches for businesses around town and having you and your wonderful brother, Bobby, deliver them, calling it “The Bag Lady.”

What you have to understand is that you’re not dealing with people that have ANY home training and / or manners. Had they these simplest of gifts, they’d NEVER have breathed a WORD about your mama. Trust that the Deen family has a fan base that won’t soon forget the ignorance of these people.

Your entire family, particularly your sweet mama, makes me VERY PROUD to be a FIERCE Southern woman, wife and mother. Thank ya’ll for being who you are, who you were brought up to be and never forgetting from where you came!

Love you all!!!

Sincerely,

And another thing….In regards to Anthony’s comments about the corporations that your mom teams up with…does he realize (or care) how many jobs she helps to provide in an economy that is still hurting???  If we didn’t have people like Paula who are in positions to promote certain corporations (or even the Paula Deen brand for that matter),the USA would have even more unemployed people.  Paula Deen is a great American.

Marhaba Jamie! (That’s Hello in Arabic *smiles*)
You rock! And the same goes for your Mom and brother.
My husband & I enjoy watching your Mom’s shows on the local FN here in Abu Dhabi and we watch too many of her shows that I’m worried our lil son, Tommy, might think she’s Grandma instead (we see Paula a bit more often than we Skyped with family hehehe).
Anyhow, you know you’re doing something right when you’ve got ALL YOUR FANS cheering you on :D So thumbs up, and keep that butter coming *winks*

Perhaps Mr. Bourdain would benefit from some of Paula’s cooking.  It might sweeten his sour countenance.  She may want to serve him some greens to help with his other problem.

Hi Jaime and Bobby!

When I heard about Anthony Bourdain’s comments about your mom, I knew she would answer with grace and humor… and she did!  This is not the first time that he takes low shots at Food Network chefs and I’m not impressed with his methods.  Cutting others down to make yourself feel better?  Is he in middle school??  Keep your chins up… we love all of your food (Mama included of course!).  As I like to tell my students (I am a school counselor)...the best way to deal with a bully is to show him that he has not gotten to you.  Plus it’s obviously a personal problem.. he has the problem NOT your Mom.  Cheers!

Jamie,
I am sorry that person’s dumb comments made you upset…...
We are all adults, we all make our own choices, we live our lives as we see fit.  We decide what is good and not good for us.  We, as adults, need not answer to him, but to ourselves, our families, and if you believe, our God!
He and his chain smoking, always drinking on TV, and his almost always non American based show, can kiss my cheese filled grits!!!!!!!
As always,
Much love,

Hey Jamie! God bless you and your whole family. Anthony B is just another a-hole trying his best to “stir the pot”....I was always taught to “kill them with kindness”, and yep it drives them crazy! I hope Bourdain gets his 15 minutes of fame, he is soooo not worth it! Hey Bourdain, Jesus loves you!
Much continued success to you and your family, just seeing your mothers smile and hearing that sweet southern voice completes my day because I know she is GENUINE!!!

Much love from Maryland,  Pam Allen

I don’t often comment on subjects I see on blogs or on public figures Facebook pages, but your mom has demonstrated to the world what true work ethic is about, what hard work can produce and how to withstand pressure with grace, charm and poise.  I’ve always found Anthony’s shows boring, so do not watch them.  Your mom’s show(s) have always been informative, instructional as well as simply entertaining.  I’ve been a fan for many years.  A few years ago, my son and I were traveling from Connecticut to Mississippi on a road trip (to see family).  When Joseph found out that I had mapped us through Savanaugh, he specifically asked to go to The Lady and Sons.  He had been watching the show with me at times, and looked at me and said “Mom.. can we go and get some of her home cooking”.  I had to laugh and reminded him that he got home cooking at home, but to him.. wasn’t the same.  We did stop in, enjoyed a wonderful lunch, some warm Southern hospitality and a memorable experience for the both of us.  (Two of my fav. recipes from her cookbooks are Cracker Salad and the Not Yo Mama’s Banana Pudding).

Susan on August 26 2011

Remember the saying “You reap what you sew”. We Mr. Bar what ever just doesn’t get it. Not only are your mother recipes are what makes her so pupular it’s personality and how genuine she is. I think that most of us who follow her know we can change up a recipe if we are concerned with the content. Paula Deems cooks realistically unlike the uppity man who is so jealous of a lady he can’t even just say we cook different and that’s what makes the world go around.

Christal Meza on August 26 2011

Obviously, Anthony never heard the saying if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.  You would think the people who employ him wouldn’t be to happy with him.  I never cared for him, or his program and have a strong dislike for him now.  The Deen’s are a wonderful family and I enjoy your programs, magazines and websites tremendously.  I can’t think of anything more stupid than to take on our much beloved Paula Deen.

I just wanted to tell you a story to explain how very much we respect and admire all of you. About five years ago, my family and I moved from the Valdosta, Georgia area to Sarasota, Florida. My husband, born and raised in North Florida experienced a culture shock that I think still haunts him to this day. We were already fans of your mom’s before we moved but she became even more important to us while we were away from home. We knew that we could sit down together and feel a little bit closer to home. To a place where all the tea is sweet, people say yes ma’am and mama’s cooking is always best.
We are back home now and you and your family will always hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.

Jamie, I think you are right about the timing of Mr. Anthony’s comments about your Mom and his book being released.  I don’t know how he could say that about Ms. Paula.  I mean, have you seen some of the crap he has eaten on No Reservations.  YUCK!  I also believe that we all make decisions about what we choose to eat.  Regardless of the cookbooks I own, I still am responsible for what I consume.  If I go to White Castle and eat three hamburgers and fries then that was my decision.  Your Mom cooks southern food and most of us have grown up eating that type of food.  I’m sure it’s hard to hear all these negative comments.  But remember you, Bobby, and Paula have done a lot of postive things like charity work.  Keep it real and don’t let them bring you down.

I’ve never watched Anthony Bourdain in my life.  And neither has my quite old Southern granny (who is still kickin’ it after years of consuming delicious and traditional Southern foods which are often criticized).

Your mom is way more entertaining and comes across as a woman of warm heart on the TV.  Her recipes have pleased us when we prepare them, and well, the recipes remind me of home.  (I am from the South.  The South has always been a threat to some Yankees like Mr. Bourdain, haha, so maybe that’s why he’s so scared of your mother!)

I’d say to Mr. Bourdain:  Viva la capitalism!!!

Jamie,

WOW. It’s one thing to promote a book etc… but to personally attach a person is uncalled for. I’ve met Mrs. Paula Deen and she is the kindest person on earth. In the end God is one who truly knows the heart of each of us.As for taking the media personally or even giving them one second of our time or control over one’s emotions is only giving them what they want. This too shall pass.

Good for you Jamie!  I like Anthony Bourdain but his comments were totally uncalled for.  How about all the alcohol he consumes during one of his episodes?  Should he be called out for contributing to America’s drinking propblems?  As I recall, Your Mom does not even drink alcohol.
So he should put that his his holier than though pipe and smoke it!
If he doesn’t like your Mom’s food, than he doesn’t have to eat it!!
Just like if I don’t want to watch Anthony Bourdain eat an armadillo on his show, I can turn the channel.
America is a free country, everyone has their right to an opinion, but what they don’t have a right to do is slaughter people with their opinions.
Your Mom, and your family have done more good for people in the past ten years, than most people do in a lifetime…so please don’t let cruel comments change what you guys do.
I Love it that you spoke your mind!!

Jamie…...Anthony has no room to talk about bacon, pork or how your momma cooks.  He is a self confessed pork-a-holic and will eat pork any way that it is fixed even if it is in another country!  He also will eat just about anything that doesn’t try to eat him first!  So poop on him!!  I really can’t stand folks that try to hype themselves (or a book) at other’s expense.  Your family has worked really, really hard and I had the distinct pleasure of eating at the original Lady & Sons when I lived in Savannah before Ms Paula got on TV.  The food was excellent and reminded me of my momma’s cooking when I didn’t have her on this earth anymore.

Jamie, Well said. Your mom is far from the most dangerous woman in America.  She worked hard to support herself and her amazing sons.  She started with $200 and look at her now.  She never forgot her roots and her love of family.  If you don’t like her food then don’t eat it.  And if you are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, then tweak her recipes. Or better yet, follow Bobby’s recipes.  It’s unfortunately this person took pot-shots at your Mom in order sell his book and show.  I loved the Today Show.  Don’t mess with our Paula Deen!

I totally agree with you Jamie - people need to do their homework before opening their mouth about something that they really don’t know about - your Momma! She’s a hard working, dedicated person who has worked and earned everything she has, and may I add, has done an awesome job.She loves her family which now days is VERY important after listening/reading the news about abuse. I’ll step off my box now as well!  You said it all and they can all kiss my butt when they are done with yours!  HaHAa! I would be so ashamed and embarrassed by his mouth and behavior if I were his child.  If you have ever watched his show, you’ll see him guzzling the alchol to the point of being drunk, or he is already drunk, and his language is something else.  He cusses worse than a sailor not to mention what he puts in his mouth.  GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT!!! I for one am proud for the Deen family for what they have accomplished and for what they stand for.  I have met and talked with the Deen family on several occasions, and every time has been a wonderful experience. The Best!!! I cook the recipes, and have eaten at both restaurants and her home.  Every bite has tasted wonderful.
So my comment to Anthony Bourdain, (aka GARBAGE MOUTH) is Back Off, You’re barking up the wrong tree here bud.

Lot of love to Paula, Jamie and Bobby and God Bless.

Hey Jamie.  Your mother (and you and your brother) have been such an inspiration to me.  After learning of your mother’s success story, it set me on fire to do something myself.  I attended culinary school, at 45.  It did not change the way I cook, though.  The first week, I told my chef, if you just added some sausage to that veloute sauce you would have sausage gravy.  Make some biscuits and you’ve got some good eatin’!  Don’t think he liked that too much.
I think alot of these so called chefs are so pretentious. Mr. Bourdain is certainly one of those chefs.  He can kiss my ass.  After some of the things I have read about him, he probably would!
Anyway, I would like to thank you and your wonderful family for being my muse.  I now own my family’s long time BBQ restaurant, Smoke House BBQ and Catering, in Gainesville, GA.  We’ve been around for over 30 years.  We must be doing something right!  We are doing some growing right now and hope to be around for at least another 30 years.  Both of my daughters work for me.  It’s hard work, but we love it.  Restaurant business is like show business:  if it ever gets in your blood, it’s hard to get out.
Come see us if you are ever in that area.  Next time you are on your way to Athens to a Georgia game, swing by and have some of the best BBQ of your life.
As for Mr. Bourdain, he probably would not know real, good, food if it jumped up and bit him on the butt.
Love y’all, keep up the good work.

Glad to see your back and that both your boys are growing big and doing good. You deserved a long break to be with your family and kiss on those babies.

People are so crazy! I’m sure Anthony Bourdain doesn’t know anything about any of you in which case he should hush up. God don’t like ugly.

Also, he has obviously never had your mama’s peach cobbler or vadilia onion pie. Maybe the bull testicles he ate in wherever have permenately altered his judgement.

I just love your input about Bourdain!  Was looking to see if any of the Deen’s would take him to task, and so happy to read your comments and standing up for your mom!  Yes, she did work her butt off, you all did, and no one should attack another person’s style of cooking!  It’s food racism?
Anyway, I’m pretty much of a health nut, vegetarian, and LOVE her recipes - I either cut back on some of the fats (butter) or I go for the whole recipe and we eat it in moderation.  I do not believe in depriving ourselves nor substituting low fat products, there’s nothing like the real thing, and in small doses, it’s fine!
So, exercise, eat right and at least once a week make a Paula Deen dish and enjoy your life!
God Bless the Deen family!

I personally watched on episode of Anthony Bourdains show and knew I didn’t want to eat ‘exotic’foods that he showcased. How dare he speak that way about our “beloved” Paula Deen. She presents some of the best food on the network for us to share with our families. Everyone takes recipes and adapts them to meet their own nutritional needs for their families.
I didn’t particularly like him before but now he’s on my list of most undesirable people in America. His show is one of those you sit and wonder just why Food Network keeps it on the air.
Your families story is one of pride and hard work. Your Mama did great in finding that hard work and determination brought her to our attention and you all are reaping the benefits. Your Mother wouldn’t hurt a fly. Keep doing what you are and we’ll keep watching, baking, and buying your great recipes. Blessings to all of you.

Whenever people comment on others they should first look in their own backyard.  Mr. Bourdain and his comments were rude and calculated to strike the PR bandwagon.  If he had ever tasted Paula’s food he would know she is the real deal not a pioused, uninformed man who probably cannot boil water!  Maybe he should come to Savannah and eat at the table y’all would set for him and he would be treated like family just like everybody else!  He would taste real food prepared by real cooks and enjoy the hospitality that true Southern folks know and love about the Deens!  Cook on, Paula and sons, you know we love ya! Our family visited with yours in July and it was the highlight of our week-getting to eat the foods we have seen Paula prepare so many times on TV.  Her recipes are fun, interesting and oh so tasty-we enjoyed the entire experience at Lady and Sons. So, invite Mr. Bourdain to enjoy himself with a visit to the excellent restaurant, the hospitality and great foods of the South-he may find a little of his own mother in Paula’s cooking-it won’t hurt him-just look at all the satisfied customers that are happy to come back again and again! God continue to Bless us all!!

Jamie,
You said it right that everyone has an opinion just like they all have…well I’m a lady so I can’t say you know what..LOL!! Since it is all about opinions…heres mine for what its worth…. Who cares what he thinks…or any other negative person that hasn’t given it much time to even do the research to know what they speak about. I for one ADORE your mother! I also admire her. From what I know of her , she has ALWAYs worked hard, and through that hard work she was able to raise 2 fine sons and create what has become a gift to soo many. Yes it is a gift to watch her show on cooking, and As a mother with a fine son myself…LOL..I LOVE watching you and her interact on the shows. Makes me wanna cook something in the kitchen with my son!! LOL!!( whom by the way wanted to become a chef after watching Ratatoolie…yes he’s quite the charactor….why I think I LOVE your mother soo much…shes quite the charactor herself!!)
I think your Mother shows spirit and has a zest for life and the good things in it…Id be proud to call her a friend and Im proud to serve the foods she prepares. The only enemy to the people is usually the people themselves..we know what we should be eating and what we shouldnt…or when we should push back the plate and not go for that 3rd helping…and while Im on my soapbox…LOL..I think its when we stopped using butter and went to Fake Margerine that all the trouble with weight got started….thats right around the time everything got soooo over processed…and that has been the real enemy….Not your sweet southern cooking momma….nor you and your brothers recipies….besides a person just plain feels good watching you all at work…Never mind the opinionated fools out there…Keep doing what your doing ...and Jamie…I admire you sticking up for your mother….that makes a mothers heart glad to see!!

I am an elementary school teacher and find Bourdain’s behavior to be that of a third grade bully.  Because of his insecurities and maybe the competition that the Paula Deen empire has become, he finds it necessary to berate and belittle those he feels are “beneath” him.  I would take the Deen family natural charm and personality, as well as their food, over that pompous snob and what he fails to offer, any day.  It’s just another example of blaming an individual, a company, a group for the failures and problems of others.  Heaven forbid we take responsibility for ourselves and what we choose to eat.  Blame the sweetest lady in the culinary world.  Despicable.

Well…

I am a London based English Vegetarian.  I’ve just finished reading “It Ain’t All About The Cookin’” (which someone bought for me as a gift) and now all I want to do is mash some “tata’s”, make a bowl of collared beans (whatever they are) and experience grits.  I found this blog after visiting the Lady and Sons website and I just want to say: if eating the food makes you feel as good as reading about it then Paula Deen certainly is a very dangerous lady…but in the best of ways!

On paper, I am the last person in the world to defend this cooking but I am so fed up with supposedly healthy people promoting an unhealthy attitude towards food.  It isn’t the natural products like butter, potatoes and cream that will kill you: it’s the chemicals, neurosis and ‘fake-food’ that’ll do it!

Good for you Jamie! Way to stick up for your mother and her food. I had the pleasure of seeing your mom live in Philly a few years back and she was a number of things…a class act, a super-nice lady, and a heck of a cook. A danger…not so much. The talking heads and the New York Times can go fly a kite. And Anthony Bourdain…I expected more from a Jersey boy. But like you said, he’s got books to sell too. Can’t get too mad. :]

Great post!

I read the Bruni article in the Times and the comments, and I recall thinking everyone sounded like a pompous ass.  That’s the trouble with self-proclaimed foodies - inherent snobbery.  They think a doctored up dish with some fancy, esoteric ingredients shipped in from some far off place qualifies a meal as more worthy than something someone makes with love that gets gobbled up at the dinner table.

I’d rather have your mom’s recipes any day, thank you very much.  Her cinnamon rolls - which I’ve made many times, are fantastic.  I recently tried a swiss chard and sausage soup as well, which was so good!

Granted, many of her dishes are not what I’d call “light,” but that’s what moderation is about.  Eat a little, and go about your day.

Great work, keep it up.  I love Paula’s shows on the Foodnetwork.

Unless a person is on a specific diet for medical reasons we can eat anything in moderation.  Anthony Bourdain passed a crappy comment about Rachael Ray too.  On TV I saw him say, sarcastically “Oh yeah, and Rachael Ray is a great chef too.”  Anthony Bourdain has his own success so I don’t see why he has to begrudge anyone else their success.  I’ve watched alot of cooking shows and food shows and almost everyone has something to offer.

Well - a month later I’m just reading and responding to your blog.  It’s ironic - my first time on your site(looking for dinner ideas for the kids!)and I saw all your pics and public appereances; and my first thought was WOW you guys have really put yourselves out there in public.  I’m an a long time fan of your Mom’s (her book changed my life - serenity prayer!)After reading this post - I can see that you all have the same stuggles as others in the public eye.  Shame on Anthony and Adam getting sucked into the negative media game; but as we know - it will come back and bite them in the booty.  And that’s ok - we all have to learn how lives our lives at any age.  Good Luck to you and family; I’ll keep checking your site for yummy food!  Take care.

Never liked Anthony Bourdain.  I think that he appears to try and be like a rock star type of chef; however, I feel that he just shows a nasty looking side of himself.  I never saw anything he did that looked appetizing.  Although, no one ever answered my email to the Lady and Sons, I still enjoy watching your mom’s television show and especially when either one of you are on it with her.  I wish people would realize that you don’t have to make the unhealthy things unless you want to or do like Bobby and make it lighter.  We do have choices and are in a free country to choose for ourselves.

I watch the show all the time and see nothing wrong with the way your Mom cooks.  I love to watch her show especially when she has you or Bobby or the rest of the family involved in it.  I think Mr. Bourdain is full of Paris.  As you said everyone is entitled to an opinion as long as it does not attack someone who is good and decent.  I know he has made a lot of enemys by saying what he did.  I happened onto this blog of yours quite by accident while looking for the brownie recipe that you did on your Mom’s show today, the 3rd of October.  I cannot find it.  I will keep looking.  Good luck to you and your growing family.

Anthony Bourdain is egotistical and a horse’s ass whose only goal is promoting Anthony Bourdain. His attacks on your mother and other food celebrities are veiled attempts to attract attention to himself. I’ll be in Savannah to review Savannah Technical College’s culinary arts programs for re-accrediation from the American Culinary Federation in mid-November and thoroughly look forward to stopping by The Lady and Sons for dinner. I respect your mom for who she is—and your family for being tight against jealous criticism.

i like anthony bourdain AND i like your mother. as morrissey famously sang, “i can have both.” it’s too bad bourdain is too short-sighted to see that.

Isn’t funny how it seems some non - southerners are so quick to sometimes sterotype us people from the south and our way of life ? The way we talk, the way we eat, etc. I’m such a fan of your family . To watch you all together is watching the true southern family. We are loud and proud and eating the way our mamas and grandmammas cooked is part of being who we are. I couldn’t imagine growing up or living anywhere else or any other way. And by the way, I wonder if Mr. Bourdain saw your mom’s latest on the NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER LIST ???????? Seems people all over the country are buying and loving it smile

Jamie - First, matzo l tov on Matthew.  Second, and most important… I do NOT understand why cooks like your mother and Rachael Ray say they are not chefs.  No degrees?  Who gives a flying poop!  To me a chef takes what they know of food and CREATES dishes by mixing and matching and trying different things together until they come up with something that tastes good.  Am I missing the point?  Is this NOT what they TEACH you at chef school???  I may not be a ‘chef’ but I do like to experiment.  Sometimes they work, sometimes not.  Also, I have traveled a little bit outside the USA. (not anywhere as much as AB) but when I was there, I didn’t make fun of their language, like he did in St. Petersburg or the people in general.  I have watched 2 of his shows and they so disgusted me that I have never watched him again.  Let’s see - I’ve watched Paula’s Home Cooking, Paula’s Best Dishes, Paula’s Party, Road Tasted (sorry they’re off) and several special’s with your family.  Also, looking forward to Bobby’s show next month.  Maybe you and your mom will guest on that!  But please, never put that rude, ugly and horrible person on a show in front of me again!!!
Thanks for everything.  Best best wishes for your holiday season and a healthy New Year.  grin

Jamie

If Anthony bourdain had ever heard of agoraphobia he would be ashamed of him self.  I have suffered with this dis order for over thirty years and no one has been a bigger hero to me than Paula.  Thus disease can be so debilitating that it knocks most of its victims to the ground and never lets. Them up!!  She succeeded in life despite this disease.  I suspect if Bourdain ever experienced a full blown panic attack he would disappear and we would never hear from him again. I wish you and your entire family a very very good new year.

Dear Jamie-
I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for most of my life.
I’m sorry that the “Tony Bourdains” of the world need a scapegoat for the obesity problem in the USA- but they need to leave Paula Deen alone. She’s not doing anything different than our dear Julia Child did in the 60’s when she qualified that “This is not a dessert/meal that you will want to eat everyday”. Everything in moderation- including moderation. People have free will and should be held accountable for their own choices. If they want to eat a whole Gooey Butter Cake- though I don’t know how you could!- they should be responsible for that decision. I am so tired of people not taking responsibility for their own issues. And here is your mother in the public eye taking responsibility! How hard must it have been to go public with this- and how graceful she is doing it! I applaud her courage and desire to become a teacher for such a serious subject as Diabetes.
I love your mother. I will continue to love her through this new chapter in her life and feel closer to her now that we have something so important in common.
Thank you for what you and your whole family have done and continue to do to make the comfort of the family kitchen accessible to everybody!
I will continue to applaud and watch everything that Paula Deen does.
Her humor, grace and positive attitude is priceless and so needed in this world full of Tony Bourdains.
Thank you!

At 75 years young, I would be content to realize only one “bucket list” wish and that is to come to Savannah and eat at “The Lady and Sons!”
Not much I can add to all the other comments except to re-enforce the very real truth that we are all responsible for our own health and can’t be blaming any one else if we decide to eat what we know isn’t necessarily good for us!

Paula, good luck with your diabetes regime. The disease runs in my family too and could be lurking around the corner for me as well, but when I lost my husband in 2008, although I too believe in “everything in moderation”, at this stage of my life am I going to deny myself the some of the “foods” that I still enjoy?  I think not!
Would love to meet you in person and thanks for being the “real” person you are.

I watch your mama’s show religiously. She reminds me of my mother, who I lost in 2007 to cancer at too young of an age. Mama never wrote down any of her recipes and I find alot of “mama’s comfort food” in your family recipes. It brings me closer to my mama, and I am truly grateful for that. When anyone bashes your mama it sets a scarlett fire in me.
Anthony Bourdain ain’t nothing but a self proclaimed wanna be (whatever he’s supposed to be) yankee snot. I have watched his show a couple of times and get disgusted every time and change the channel. He comes off extremely arrogant and pissy to me while interacting with the people on his show. If he were to come to our neck of the woods I’m sure we could teach him some manners and maybe a little southern grace and wipe out the jealously and envy eating at his soul that causes him to think he is somebody high enough to try to judge others. Here in south ga(kingsland is only about an hour and a half from savannah)we are taught from the cradle to respect others and never judge. That’s GOD’s right, not ours.

Just read your blog from last Aug.Jamie regarding A** Bourdain, as I have always said each person is responsible for what or how much they put into their mouths. Also Paula did not owe anyone her personal medical information. Btw old A**(and I suspect serious drinker/whacky weed smoker)was on HLN news talking about your Mom again, and NOT surprising him talking about the new season of his show. So really who is his pr person that his schtick is grab a headline or news attention by inserting Paul Dean and then sell your show. Geeze how pathetic does a grown man have to get. Anyway keep strong Dean family and know the people love ya.

I think your Mom is awesome!  She’s entertaining, she’s sexy, she’s warm, and her food rocks!  Haters are always going to hate, can’t change it.  As long as the family is happy and healthy, who cares what some small minded people think?  And Bourdain got more press for his smack talking of Ms. Paulla Deen, then for anything he’s ever done on his own.  He’s a punk!  Paulla is my hero!

Who cares what people say. He was definitely jealous and needed the eyes on him, but I believe it back-fired. I love your mom and you boys. I had the opportunity to go to Lady and Sons and it was devine. The young man that waited on us was a keeper. My husband tells everybody, that was one of the best meals he has ever eaten. God Bless and keep on taking up for your mama!

I love your family. Your Mom is so great! She is the kind of Mom I try to be, the kind of Mom I have. Paula Deen is doing the right thing. The day she found out she had diabetes she owned it and is now working to stay healthy. Your Mom does more for America then any other show. She shows the World we are still decent, sweet, intelligent people. Anthony’s show is down right dangerous. He goes to locations that are questionable and not friendly to the average American traveler. Sure it is easy for him, he has a crew and a camera, some tiny amount of fame to keep him from being hurt in these hot beds he travels to. I am not all about America only, but during these hard times, we need to keep our money and our focus on Americans talent first. Who has that kind of cash to travel these day? Anthony is toxic mentally and people will follow his foolish example of unwise travel. So who is the dangerous one? Keep the healthy recipes coming Deen Boys! Ya’ll are looking great!

Jamie,
I LOVE, LOVE your new show!  You bring the best elements to it with easy to make luscious foods, showing us your family, which is so endearing and makes for great “reality tv” too!  Having mom there, as she IS the cement/foundation of it all and showing us the love & respect for your beautiful family!
I hope you are F O R E V E R!!
God Bless you all!

I am a sister of nine, a mother of six, a grandmother of thirteen, and a great grandmother of twenty. as you can see I’ve been around a lot of small children… Mr. Deen I am absolutely appalled at your first show.. If you don’t know..Paula should of…and if not..the producers certainly had a responsibility to not have something so deadly dangerous on your first show.  A perfect family Dad, Mom, Jack and Moose eating Chicken,  with a good chance of becoming a family of three. you still don’t know what I’m talking about do you? I’ll tell you..I have been told since I was 5 I’m now 75. YOU DO NOT GIVE A CHILD A CHICKEN LEG OR THIGH BONE TO CHEW ON..I was five when I seen a child choke on the knuckle or joint of a chicken leg..I was not very old, but I’ll never forget how very very scary it was to see this child turn blue choking on the joint of a chicken bone that she manage to get off of the bone they had given her to chew on.  Please,  Please.  Please do not give a child a chicken bone..If you see someone do it please correct them so they know. It was a long time ago but I can still see in my mind that child turning blue before they finally got it out. For that matter NO CHICKEN BONES for the dog either.. as they chew on them the bone becomes splinters and slivers of bone gets stuck in their throat..I Love Love Love the Deen family shows, except for this one dangerous incident, I can’t get out of my head,.. now that I’ve told you about it maybe the thought will leave me alone..

Dear Jamie I saw you mom when she was on Door Knock Dinners and have watched everything since. Bought her cook books and eaten in your restaurant in Savannah.  i am diabetic and love her show.  Too much butter and sugar and mayo of every day but not for once in a while. I watch her show for the joy it bring s me.  Now for your new show.  It is GREAT !!!!!!  You prepare meals with Jack around like normal families would.  You are preparing food that is basically good for your family and you do it with easy movements so anyone can learn from you.  You are encouraging me that young Dad will get into the kitchen and cook for their families.  Jamie You are doing GOOD THINGS I will keep watching.  LOVE to all of you and we so wish Bobby would marry that doll from MIKE and MOLLY

Jamie, just wanted to say that I love your new show… Of course I love your mama’s show and now I get to see you.  Can’t wait until Bobby’s show begins…!!!

I only have one complaint?  WHY isn’t Bobby’s show on the Food Network instead of the Cooking Channel?  I can only watch it when Dish gives me free previews for a month or when the Food Channel chooses to show reruns.  I love his show as well as how much I love yours.  Tell Brooke to get her act together.  The Deans are FOOD network Stars!!!  Be well.  grin

Jamie - really like your show, but I wish for you that your kitchen had AC!!!

Your Mother’s recipe for Orange Banana Bread - could you give me yours that less calories, etc.  I want to make it for my son whose a diebectic (pills only).  Can you are maybe Bobby help me with this?  I love the family togetherness you all have and your Mother’s laughter makes me smile and feel lifted(especially with what I am going through.  Food network has really helped me out some days.  I tape it everyday.
Thanks for any help you can give.
