What the heck is physiological stasis?
April 11th, 2011

What’s up, y’all?

Thanks for checkin’ out my blog. I promise I’ll try to keep this as interesting as possible. I’m not a man of very many words, but I saw how much fun Jamie was having with his blog, and I figured that I would give it a try and see what all the fuss was about.

Okay, so. What’s been going on with me?

I just got back into the gym after three weeks out with a bad back. It’s kind of a funny story. So y’all know that I like to go to the gym, and one of the things I’ve been trying to work up to is the 225 lbs. bench press, which is the same amount they test aspiring rookies with at the NFL Combine, to see how many they can do in a row. Right now my record is 14. Which isn’t bad until you consider I saw a guy on TV at the NFL Combine pop out 49 without skippin’ a beat! Just boom, boom, boom! He made number 48 look just like number one.

Well, my competitive side in me took over and I tried to keep up. Y’all, I only got to 10 before I arched my back and felt something pull and I was down for the count. Can you believe that?

I was pretty upset because I knew with an injured back I couldn’t go to the gym for a while. Not only that, but traveling has been a real pain in the neck because flying in the upright position for hours at a time only made my back hurt worse. It was murder. Murdaaah!

On one of my flights, I picked up an issue of Esquire magazine. It’s a pretty interesting magazine, but this particular issue had something about “physiological stasis” in it. Now, I’m not real familiar with the term, but from what I remember, the definition of that term is negating your vices with equal amounts of exercise. And I was like, “That’s me! That’s the definition of me.” Just because I go to the gym, doesn’t mean that I always eat like I should. I mean, I’m a regular guy- I drink beer and eat french fries and mayonnaise. It’s like, you know, if I had a few beers last night with my burger, then I’m going to have to get some extra cardio in at the gym.

So, anyway, now that I’ve been out with my back hurt, I’ve been doing a lot of cooking at home to help balancing out not going to the gym. It’s been a lot of chicken and brown rice. And it gets so boring! I’ve been trying to do something different with the rice, just to help keep it interesting, and I thought I would share some of those things with y’all.

With the rice, this is really easy, I get that boil-in-a-bag rice. It’s the best thing in the world. It’s a little bag, and it’s the perfect amount for one person, and then I totally just jazz it up. You know, I’ll do fresh okra and tomatoes and mix that in with the cooked rice. Or pour it over the rice. Or pour it over the chicken, over the rice. Sometimes, I’ll use black beans; you know, I’ll just add all kinds of different vegetables to the rice and then serve that with either a fish, like tuna steak, or a chicken breast. And then a side of veggies, like I’ll blanch asparagus or I’ll throw some on my Paula Deen indoor grill.

And you know what I’ve neglected that I’ve been tryin’ to do lately? I eat breakfast now. I used to be really bad about not eating breakfast, and then going to the gym and working out, and then finding myself starving by the afternoon. So I’ve made sure to start eating breakfast. I woke up this morning at 6 a.m. and had a nice bowl of cornflakes and an egg. It could be a boiled egg, or even a skillet-fried egg. Making sure that I get that first meal in has already started making me feel better. It makes my metabolism feel better; and I feel more satisfied in the evenings when I eat dinner, so I can eat less.

And that’s all tied up into me not being to the gym. I’ve had to really work hard to find a balance in order to keep my shape up and these tips have really helped. And they’re easy enough that really anyone can do them.

Well, y’all, that’s all I’ve got for this week. Stay tuned, and I’ll keep you updated with more tips and tricks I learn about!

See y’all,

Bobby

Hi Bobby,

Glad to see you are starting a blog, I’m sure you will enjoy it. Sorry to hear about your back but sometimes all it takes to get ourselves back on track is to have something happen.

Your ideas with the rice sound great, I like to mix my veggie’s in the rice. If there are leftovers, you can make a great rice/veggie patty the next day.

Look forward to your next entry. Take care.

WOW-how did I not see this earlier? I’m on your website all the time and Twitter and facebook…..this is great!

Sorry about your back, I love that you have simple idea’s to spruce up brown rice (I hate brown rice) but I’ll give the boil-in-a-bag a try and add some veggies.

I meant to call the Paula Deen store today to order your dry rubs.  I ordered both the bbq sauces and love love love them!  I’m gonna order more sauce and get one of each rub for my husband’s Easter Basket - I try to do something ‘manly’ for him every Easter smile

I’m gonna read your other blog posts to catch up, great to see you here!

With much love and admiration - Tracey Lopez/Turlock Ca

For long trips have tried using a Therema Care wrap or something to make it more comfortable?
Good idea about the rice and veggies.

I’m so glad we get to hear from you, Bobby! I completely agree that breakfast can make your day so much better. Sitting down at the table for 10 minutes (versus shoving a granola bar in my face in the car on my way to work or at my desk) helps me ease into the day. I notice the way the sun is falling on the table, hear the birds chirping and it puts me in a better mood. I’m with ya on the rice and veggies too-practically a one bowl meal-little cleanup. Take care of your back!

I was wondering if you were ever going to start your own blog. Love your family, shows, and books. I look forward to reading more of your healthy eating hints and recipes!

Well I know you like fish so to help with staying on food track, try this. Fix salmon how ever you like but then crumble it into pieces. Fix your rice. then make a blend of stewed tomatoes, onion, bell peppers and spices like garlic pinch of salt and pepper little bit of basil. Plate the rice first, then the sauce, then put the salmon on top. Have had this recipe since I was young. It’s pretty good if you like salmon.
Remember to take it easy on your back. Might try swimming if you want to get exercise. Try heated pools or indoor pools.

Hey Bobby, I’m sorry for this but what I’m gonna say has nothing to do with your post! I’m 20 years old from South Carolina and my dream is to meet your mother! I have her cookbooks, magazines, and record all her shows. I cook for my church every week. My other dream is to some day open my own restaurant! I’d love to get some advice from your mother! And if there’s a chance that I can meet your mother in person I’d love to do so. I know she’s extremely busy, but this is my dream! Thank you so much for your time!

Congrats on your blog!!! Happy to see you here. Sorry to hear about your back. An injured back is so frustrating.

I must say I am a fan of french fries with mayo too. Two of my favorite food groups!!!!

This has been a year for changes for me too. I have been working out more than I have in a LONG time! It feels so great to feel good and see results. Like you Bobby I love to eat and I won’t give up some foods. To me is all about moderation. Have that chip but not the entire bag! Do I love going to the gym…umm that would be a NO. But I make it happen.

Wishing you a Happy Birthday early! Have a great time on the book tour. Too bad you guys aren’t coming this way would love to see.

Take care of that back!

Hi! I so know how you feel about not getting to the gym! Ugh, I even get headaches when I miss a day! I started working out Nov. 1st and I’ve lost 51 lbs! I eat like you during the week and cheat on Saturdays! I have found that whole grain english muffins are perfect for breakfast, you can even have butter smile I have hypothyroidism so I have learned all the tricks to making that metabolism speed up. Anyway, thanks for your wonderful recipes and hope that back gets better! (I benched 65 lbs for the first time, lol, that includes the bar!)

Hi Bobby,
I’m really glad to see your blog. I,as well as my family and friends/co-workers, have enjoyed the healthier alternative recipes from the website. I’m trying to eat healthier and exercise more but unfortunately have the same old tastebuds. It’s always nice to know there are yummy alternatives to some of the recipes I enjoy. I hope your back gets better soon. As a Physical Therapist I feel the need to state if you follow your doctor’s or therapist’s;) reccomendations you should be well on the road to recovery soon.
Take care

great idea about the rice in the bag. I love okra so I might try throwing in some okra and tomatoes once the farmers market open up here in Iowa.  Can’t wait for the grilling cookbook to come out.

Hey there! Well, I’m out West in Oregon! I know your pain about missing a working out. I’m the gal that if it’s 10pm and I haven’t workout yet, well turn the music up and put me on the treadmill, for a few miles. That’s the only way I’m going to NOT be grumpy the following day. Crazy yep, but there’s something about just doing your own thing when working out, & it’s my “mommy time” after a day of chasing my lil fellas around(7 & 3 yrs). I enjoy watching your family on the Food Network, you seem real and there’s NOT a lot of “real” people on TV anyone, so Thank You! I hope one day my kitchen will be like your families! Have you tried a Chiropractor for you back?! They are life savers, trust me. I ran the Hood to Coast Relay last year. Not sure if you’ve heard of it, but it’s a team of 12 who run 197 miles. Starting @ Mt. Hood. Or @ 5am & run to Seaside,Or. our team did it in 26 hrs, wicked fun!! Have fun on the road & maybe one day we’ll make it to your Family Restaurant !!

Hi Bobby,
Yes, I am sorry about your back also…that is one pain I especailly don’t like…not that I am fond of any pain…!  ha ha
Been copying off some of your lighter versions of mom’s recipes and am excited to try some of them.  I like to tone down the eating here in Arizona when the summer heat hits…don’t want to be overstuffed at 100+ degrees…!
Thanks, Marilyn

Hey Bobby! Long time no talk! Glad to see your getting back on the horse with this blog! I agree you have to have a little something in the morning, it does make quite a difference all day long. Your not so tired or blah! I’m sorry you hurt your back, but that is just awesome that you can bench that much. Very impressed! Well, get back in that gym as soon as you can or you’ll drive yourself crazy!!

It’s FNG from now over 7 years ago.
I am also still working out like mad woman only I get to vicariously live through people eating burgers and fries at Kumas Corner where I work.
I always think about my time in Savannah at Todd’s apartment and how much I miss boat rides and decent weather.

Ah, you’ve started a blog. You will be addicted before long smile

I am a great lover of brown rice. (chicken and clack beans to!)

Being from the South, all the great foods we love aren’t that waistline friendly.

I enjoy my wine and good eats, so therefor I have to run/play tennis JUST SO I can enjoy these things. So, kudos to the gym.

I can’t wait to see y’all at the end of the month at LuLu’s!
Bring your momma, ha!

Hey Bobby!
Really happy to see you blogging!!  Sorry to hear about your back.  Hopefully the pain is not too intense now.  I wasn’t really big on eating breakfast either.  Always in a rush in the mornings but lately I‘ve been taking the time to eat breakfast and I notice a huge difference with my energy levels.  I feel full for a longer period of time too.  I try to eat good during the week and on the weekends I’ll splurge but there are times when I crave a slice of cake during the week smile  I also workout too. I started yoga not to long ago and I really enjoy it.  Have fun on the tour and I’m looking forward to seeing you guys at the book signing.
Glad to see you back!!
Take care!!

Hey Bobby D—so GLAD you are now blogging.  I’ve said over the past few years that you should.  You say you’re a man of few words but I know your blog will be fun and interesting.  About rice—the only kind I like is yellow rice.  I think I’ll give the white one a try and add things to it.
I’m hoping that you or your brother will tell us the names of your rubs and if they’re hot or real spicey.  I think that might help many to decide which ones or maybe all of them we’ll buy.  Thanks in advance.

I’m sure your back is okay by now—hope it is.  My only exercise is walking and I do enjoy that.

Happy Birthday early to you.  Enjoy the baseball game you’ll be attending.

Really looking forward to your next blog.  It is FUN!!!!

HUGS to you, JANN

Hi Bobby.  Glad to hear your back has mended.  I’m sure your trainer will work you back up to speed safely…Have you tried quinoa?  It’s a super grain.  I cook a batch in chicken stock and store in the refrigerator. Then as the week progesses I add it to meals such as homemade miso soup, chick peas in red curry sauce or a combo of lowfat pesto, steamed broccoli, black olives and shaved parmesan. Be well!  Eat well!

Bobby,

You have to eat breakfast, suggestion: Max Muscle go to their website, they have protein powders that are amazing!  Roll out of bed have a shake first thing, I mean first thing!  It will get your metabolism going and you will not crash doing your morning workout.

Hi Bobby,

I’m a chicken and brown rice gal myself, but it does get boring. Thanks for passing along the tips to jazz it up. My problem is I love dessert. Can’t help it. I keep in good shape, but I just have to treat myself once in a while. I do try to lighten up any dessert I make. With brownies I add applesauce instead of oil and use egg whites instead of whole egg. Makes them lighter and more cake like. I love to write poetry and paint and I also love to cook. Cooking is an art form too. smile

Sending this from St. Cloud, FL.

All the best,
Lisa
